PROJECT:El zaguán
OAcademy Contemporary Collaboration Certificate (2025) (A new solo harp work composed for Renée Qin by Nacho González Nappa) Overview El zaguán is a new solo harp work written specifically for Renée Qin by Latin Grammy–winning composer Nacho González Nappa as part of the 2025 OAcademy Contemporary Collaboration Certificate and the Gabriela Ortiz Fellowship. The piece serves as a cultural threshold—an invitation to step across memory, architecture, and sound, where the harp becomes a storyteller navigating spaces between the private and the public, the past and the present. This project marks a significant milestone in Renée’s artistic journey, expanding the contemporary harp repertoire and deepening her collaborations at the intersection of global music cultures. About the Collaboration Renée was one of only seven performers selected internationally to join the inaugural Contemporary Collaboration Certificate, a program pairing composers and performers to co-create new works across borders. Working with Nacho González Nappa, she explored the harp’s narrative voice, sonic imagination, and its capacity to evoke architecture, movement, and memory. From the Composer “In my childhood home in Uruguay, the zaguán was a place of quiet rituals… In El zaguán, the harp becomes a storyteller—inviting us to pass through a sonic doorway into moments of nostalgia, mischief, and stillness. This piece is both a personal offering and a shared passageway.” The collaboration involved weeks of musical experimentation, remote workshop sessions, and an exchange of cultural and personal histories. Through this process, Nacho crafted a work that reflects both his memories and Renée’s interpretive voice. About the Work — El zaguán In traditional Latin American homes, the zaguán is an architectural entryway—part corridor, part sanctuary. It is a liminal space where public and private worlds meet.
